To warm up the house I baked a mini package of banana nut muffins just 6 of them. Also polished all the wood furniture. Good smell of lemon polish. And did the laundry. Domestic day.
While dusting I came across an old, old book of poems. It belonged to my father and his older and younger brothers. They all used it in high school. Francis is the older brother, James the youngest. I guess my dad wasn't interested enough to put his name in it.
Published in 1928! Books name is Magic Casements.
It has all sorts of poems by many many different authors. It's where I first read "the Highway Man" The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees. Oh wow! Thought it was so romantic. And "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. So many great poems in it. Going to spend some time with it again.
The very first poem in the book is "America the Beautiful." Some how I can't see my dad or his younger brother enjoying this class much. His older brother, maybe. The oldest brother lost his leg in an accident when he was 12. One of my first memories of him was knocking on his wooden leg. Yes, he had a wooden leg.
Are these poems on the young peoples Iphones? Have they ever heard of them, let alone read them?
Any one remember Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. A great history lesson.
Lots of noise in the air during the afternoon. We are about 10 miles as the crow flies from Nellis Air Force Base. Today there was some kind of training exercise with the jets. One after the other taking off and/or landing. Went on for about an hour. We very seldom hear them, only when they are doing this training - about once every 3 or 4 months.
After they stopped there was a gigantic BOOM, about jumped out of my chair. Thunder and more thunder. A big surprise as the skies had cleared up a bit. Then some rain. More thunder than rain for us.
It ended up raining most of the evening and during the night. More rain expected today. The mountains got six inches of snow and it is still snowing up there.
Our ghost mountains - almost white in the low sun light.
Today Bill has a doctor appointment, finally getting him to the cardiologist. Hope it is not raining when we have to go.
I remember learning The Highway Man!
ReplyDeleteI loved that poem when I was a teenager.
ReplyDeleteYou have been domestic! I would love that book. I remember so many of those poems you mentioned. No kids now just play games on their phones, sadly.
