"Tioga" George

A snippet from George's blog"
"Tioga met George in Manteca, California 'bout the end of February, 2003. It was love at first sight. The very day that George drove Tioga home to Concord, George became a Vagabond. George never spent one day in his apartment again. Tioga was home and for Tioga & George, the adventure began.

George passed away last week. His daughter posted a final piece on his blog. Link on this page.
We met George a long time ago and spent many hours, days and weeks with him over the last eight years.  I've searched my blogs for moments we spent with him. This was our first meeting.
February 18, 2011

After settling in we went looking for George of Ms. Tioga and George. He was camped just south of Aticama on the Little River.

When we pulled up by him he came out and invited us in for a chat. Very nice man. As nice as his blog suggests.

Friday a.m.
Just wanted to post a picture of our guest for lunch Wednesday. Hopefully George enjoyed his Italian meal.
(We had both just lost our sons so we spent a lot of time talking and healing.)

We met several times during the winters spent in Aticama. But I can't find those blogs. So we jump ahead to 2013.

FEBRUARY 18, 2013

Just thought I’d throw this in. It’s a picture of Ms Tioga parked across from us at Las Jaibas. Yes, George is really here and we are keeping him busy.

The music started and the dancing began. A group of gringos were line dancing and then a couple of young Mexican girls joined them and lo and behold George got up and joined them. Go George!

FEBRUARY 19, 2013

Monday, morning bright and early we picked up George and dropped off our laundry to be done. Then we headed inland to the tiny town of Malpica. Yum! We were headed to the Malpica Panaderia

Then we took George to see and meet the “laundry ladies.”  Just outside of Concordia there are natural hot springs and the government has built a laundry facility.

And of course we had to get an ice cream cone. Today the vendor only had vanilla. The ice cream is made in his home and he sells until he runs out then goes home. Sometimes he also has strawberry ice cream. George and I enjoyed our cones – Bill was already full from the baked goods he’d eaten.

MARCH 2, 2013

I saw a small car pull up to Ms. Tioga and a couple got out and knocked on George’s door. He invited them in and they had a long visit. They are from Alaska and have been reading his blog for a long time and they just happened to be vacationing in Mazatlan right now. So they wanted to meet him. George brought his new friends over to meet us and mentioned they would like to go out to Fat Fish for ribs with all of us.  The five of us squeezed into the little car George’s friends had rented and went to Fat Fish for RIBS for dinner. (This is one of my favorite pictures.)

MARCH 3, 2013

We decided to go out to the Plazuela Machado for dinner last night. All five of us. John’s truck is too big to take to that area – well he didn’t want to drive it there and neither did Bill. So we thought we’d take a cab. Oops five of us and a driver won’t fit comfortably in a cab. Nor in a pulmonia so we HAD to take one of the red pick up truck taxis – yes! I’ve wanted to do that every time we’ve been here. All we had to do was walk out in front of the RV park and catch the first one that came by. Here it is.
George looking back at the traffic. Had to hang on or you could slip right out the back end.

Busy Day El Quelite, La Noria and Tequilla and Candy
When we were leaving George stopped to watch this cowboy put on a rope spinning demonstration in the street outside of the restaurant.
Sad day today - George is heading south again and is looking forward to new adventures. We will miss him.
The morning was cool and gray – maybe unhappy because George was leaving us. He came over for breakfast and then finished getting ready to leave and left us.
(Ms Tioga - off to another adventure.)

 JANUARY 10, 2016

Today’s blog will be about a lot of unconnected things and our breakfast in El Quelite with George yesterday.
Here are George and Bill walking out of the restaurant at Torres across the street the other day. Looks like they are discussing deep things.

Later that night we went to the Plazuela Machado to listen to music and eat.
George and Contessa also had a dance. (thank you Jackie for sending me these pictures.) Can’t believe I forgot my camera that night.

JANUARY 8, 2016

(I had mentioned going out for ribs and sent a picture to George of our meal. He jumped on a plane and came down here to Mazatlan for a week to get his ribs. This is the last time we saw him, but not the last time we talked to him. We exchanged several emails and phone calls over the last couple of years.)

George's RIBS

Getting ready to take a picture of his plate - think he has enough ribs? Also get a salad, baked potato, garlic bread and coleslaw with the meal.

We will miss him greatly. The first thing I did every morning was read his blog to see what he was up to.

I enjoyed looking back at the fun we had together. Will never forget him showing up in Mazatlan for RIBS. Wish he could have made it a couple of years ago when he started out to come here. There will be a hole in my mornings that can't be filled - always checked his blog first thing.

Thank you, Carol, for this tribute to George - prayers of peace and comfort to his family. I will remember him as wanting to live where he could wear short pants and t-shirts. Rest in Peace, George, you will be missed by so many.
