Cafe de Olla

We haven't done a whole lot the last couple of days. Just to the market. Noticed these in the bakery department.

And to have the Jeep washed.

I talk about Mexican coffee a lot, some asked me about it so here is the description and a recipe on how to make it.

Mexican spiced coffee, better known as Cafe de Olla, is made with Mexican ground coffee, cinnamon and raw dark sugar that is called Piloncillo." A traditional Mexican drink recipe that has been enjoyed by generations.

4 cups water

3 oz PiloncilloPanela or dark brown sugar about 1/2 cup

1/2 stick cinnamon

The piloncillo is on the left - cinnamon on the right. All available in most grocery stores here.

4 tablespoons ground Mexican coffee, better if using dark Mexican coffee.

In medium saucepan, place the water, cinnamon and piloncillo (or brown sugar). Turn heat and simmer until the piloncillo is dissolved. About 7 minutes.

When water starts boiling add the coffee, turn the heat off and stir.

Cover pot and let steep for five minutes. Pour through a strainer, cheesecloth, to serve.

Also you will need an olla - a ceramic clay pot traditionally used to cook soups and stews. If you don't have one, you can use a saucepan.

Usually on weekends we don't go out much as the town is full of tourists and traffic. During the week we are a little more active.

There are now 10 RVs here in the park, more are expected.

  1. Carol, do I understand correctly that you use ground coffee and not instant coffee? That sounds very good and must try it. What kind of coffee do you use while in Mexico. The El Marino coffee roasted in Mazatlan smells so good if you drive by on a day they are roasting it. That is what we use while in Mexico. Once in awhile I can even find it in decaf. Good to hear that more RV’s are pulling into Las Jaibas.

  2. Great to see the gluten-free items and such a good price.
Could you see what they use as flour? I'm guessing it is corn flour.

  3. Thanks for the recipe Carol. How great that Las Jaibas will look more like the "good old days" with more travelers. Hugs to you and Bill!

  4. Sandy - I am really not sure what kind of coffee. a picture I saw looked more like instant coffee. Or maybe really finely ground beans.. no idea.
Doug and Nancy - we are hoping more people eventually show up.
Jackie - no idea about the flour - if I remember and they have some I'll check next time.
